What a fantastic start to Cosmic City--VBS 2008! Great weather, great music, great snacks--what a fun day we had! Click here for today's photos, and click here to view today's video highlights.
In the beginning, God didn't create a big bang...He created light.
Light is an awesome, beautiful creation made up of all colors of the rainbow. We couldn't believe our eyes as we watched a chemical reaction that amazingly oscillated from green to blue to purple, then to red and back again. Click here to watch the video! This four-color reaction actually repeated itself over and over again...and if not for our little "accident", it would have gone on for a whole hour! Oh well, that's why we keep fire extinguishers around!
But our experiment doesn't hold a candle to what God did in His creation. It's exciting to see the science He gave us, illustrating what HE did. Stay tuned till tomorrow to see what "bang" we may demonstrate for our budding scientists!
Today in drama we heard the story of the creation account. But it's not just WHAT was created but WHO created it! We discovered important aspects of who God is...
He's creative, He's loving, He's powerful and He's real!
Liz, our Theater Director was assisted by two robot kids, Sadie and Circuit, who wanted to know what day robots were created. They learned how God made humans to be creative...we have a brain, wonderful hands, and curiosity. Humans made robots (and lots of other things) but only God could make our world.
"Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God." Psalm 90:2
Today we met "Disaster Dan" and "Faith N. Miracles" from International Disaster Emergency Services. Each day these two will tell us something new about IDES and their mission...to help people after disasters like storms and earthquakes.
We also learned about a new species of fish called the "coin fish." These fish are designed to hold coins that are used to feed children all around the world. Each fish will hold $5 in pennies or $20 in other coins. Every $5 we raise will feed one child for a month in an underdeveloped country. We all received one of these SonFish Banks, and we've set a goal of 250 fish by the end of the week. One fish provides a child with one meal a day for an entire month!
Busy day in crafts! Our theme today is "Worship Him". Preschoolers made earth paintings to remind us of God's creation. Elementary made nature tiles of clay with a leaf imprint reminding us to worship God for His mighty power. Upper elementary made salvation bracelets and key chains. This reminds us of the sacrifice of Christ's blood to cover our sin and provide our salvation.
We're looking forward to tomorrow's crafts to see how we can be of service to Him!
What a great 1st day of recreation! Even through play time we learned about God and how He created the world in 7 days. We know this is true because God's word tells us so.
The 4's thru 4th grade had to go to what we call "Creation Station Chairs",
but they had to either crawl, walk, run, crab walk, hop or swim to each day of creation. Awesome learning time! The 5th and 6th grade played a game called "Sliding Around the Rings of Saturn". They broke into teams and had a relay around the rings 5 times, but each time it was either walking backwards, hopping on one leg, running, skipping or hopping backwards!
We can't wait till tomorrow--it's manna for the young ones and off to Mercury for the 5th and 6th graders.
Today we're getting to know the 5's and our two Kindergarten classes! Folden's Cosmic Rays, the 5 year olds, started off a busy Monday learning all about God creating the world and everything in it. We sang about God being the Master of the Universe...and we got some exercise too! We continued the morning coloring coffee filters to make an Earth. We finished the morning with recreation and refreshments!
Brown's Rockets had a fun day worshiping God and learning about His awesome creation! We learned actions for our memory verse and sign language for "God" and "Awesome". We enjoyed crafts and recreation, and of course, snacks! We also tried to see how many kids can fit in a wheelchair!
The Van Kley class learned how God created the world. We really enjoyed the drama today. We also learned Psalm 90:2. In homeroom, we drew creation pictures to decorate the walls. Snack time was a tasty treat of personal pizzas--Pizza Planets--and grape lemonade!
Wow! What a great first day attendance!
We had 220 kids and 95 staff, bringing our total to 315--great job everyone! Remember to start filling your fish banks...our goal is 250 by the end of the week. And be working on your Deeper Space activities...our point totals will slowly go up and lead to a fun surprise at the end of the week! Did you figure out the Cosmic Clue Crew for today? The words were "PRAISE", "WILL", "YOU" and "I".
Remember to check out today's photos and watch today's newscast and Wonder U. experiment on the video page. And be sure to leave a note to all your friends and teachers on the guestbook. Tomorrow is CRAZY HAT DAY--invite your friends and we'll see you then!!
